Concept Sketches

Here are some concept sketches for my Cart 434 animation project.  Some of the sketches have faces, which goes against my concept. I just happened to draw them in. The actual characters will have the faceless heads.

Animation, Perception, Message

During the holidays I came up with an idea for an animation. I had some sketches and a rough storyboard done, but the only thing that was really concrete in my mind was that I wanted to convey some sort of message. I think I may still want to use the characters I had sketched out, but I want to change the concept of the animation. I no longer want to make it simply an animation that represents a message.

The main change I want to make has to do with the requirements for the class, and I think it will make the project a lot more interesting. I want to create a very short base animation for the characters. It will be around 15 seconds. Then I want to rework the ‘space’ three or four times to create three or four separate animations from the base.

The idea behind this would be a sort of exploration of perspective/perception, both physical and ideological. I want to explore how different camera work, environments and sounds can alter the perception of the viewer. I’d like to take this beyond just the obvious changes of making lighting more dramatic, or changing the colours to be happier or sadder. I want to see to what extent the ‘message’ of the animation can be completely changed based on these changes.

I am actually currently taking a class in applied ethics, and I think it would be really interesting to play out this animation in the context of an ethical dilemma, altering the context by altering the space and seeing how wrong/right the audience believes the characters’ actions to be, depending on the changed space/environment. Hopefully, every time the environment is changed, the dilemma would be altered, though the characters’ actions remain the same, either by exposing information that wasn’t previously available, or by playing with the presentation of the actions/characters.

I want people to see the animation and question the way they perceive events in their daily life. I want them to understand that they don’t always have the entire context and may have a very different perspective from others who may also have perceived the same events.
